These days Maori cop Tito Ihaka is leading a quieter life in the Wairarapa. Five years earlier he’d sought to step into the shoes of his long-time boss Detective Inspector Finbar McGrail after the latter’s promotion to Auckland District Commander. Dogged by the fall-out from his handling of the hit and run death of a prominent businesswoman, Ihaka was overlooked for a younger, more presentable candidate. After a men’s room confrontation with his new boss’s right-hand man, Ihaka was sent into exile. Out of the blue McGrail summons him back to Auckland. Christopher Lilywhite, the businesswoman’s terminally ill husband whom Ihaka suspected was behind his wife’s death, wants to see him. Lilywhite confesses that he had his wife murdered, but he dealt with the hit-man at arm’s length so has no idea who he is. In quick succession Lilywhite and another potential source of information are murdered. Ihaka’s old rival Detective Inspector Tony Charlton takes control of the case but with more corpses turning up and Auckland Central stretched to breaking point, he agrees to let Ihaka investigate the apparently unrelated murder of a young man about town. As the investigations expand uncovering a blackmail operation preying on married women, gang activities controlled from inside Paremeremo prison and possible police corruption, Ihaka realises that the cases are related and he’s hunting a faceless and prolific hit-man. Or is the hit-man hunting him?
Finished reading Paul Thomas's 'Death on Demand' on flight to NY. Big, bruising police procedural set in New Zealand. Excellent.

Death on Demand eBook Paul Thomas
DEATH ON DEMAND came out in 2012 and it is impossible not to question sanity. It sat in my reading queue for over a year before daylight finally dawned.Needless to say a lot of other worthy books were swept aside, because it's nearly impossible not to love these books. Partly because Tito is such a believable character - even as cop turned vigilante. Actually Ihaka as a vigilante almost sounds right. He's a man with a finally developed sense of justice and a rather ruthless attitude to providing same.
There is a strong sense of place built into these books, and a strong sense of Ihaka as a man, cop and part of the community. The plots are cleverly constructed and beautifully executed with sufficient focus on the man as well as the cop to give him some depth without taking focus from the plot advancement or even the surrounding character set.
Hopefully there will be more Ihaka books in the future - they are must purchase even if the reading bit sometimes gets a little bit disorganised.

Death on Demand eBook Paul Thomas Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this New Zealand based police procedural. The author, Paul Thomas, was new to me and a good recommendation from a friend. Interesting story and well drawn characters. And then the frustration - I wanted to read another Ihaka book by Paul Thomas. I was able to download samples but not a whole book. So I'll move onto something else for now and hope that Sgt Ihaka and I get t know each other better soon.
A great read. I shall be getting more of Paul thomas
A great crime book featuring policeman Tito Ihaka from a previous crime book. Set in New Zealand. It features some unsavoury characters and dodgy members of the police force. A great plot to keep you guessing.
Paul Thomas's series of police/whodunit novels featuring Detective Sergeant Tito Ihaka have been part of my sought-after reading for all the years Thomas has been writing. His fully three-dimensional characters place his work among my very favourite yarns.
I found this book a little slow to start but it gradually puttered along quite nicely. Set in New Zealand's largest city of Auckland, Death on Demand has murder, corruption, lies and shady characters to keep the story interesting. I found the large amount of nasty language irritating, however.
Paul Thomas is one of my favourite authors and has been for many years. I think I have read all of his novels and if not, it's only because they were so hard to find pre- kindle.
I was especially glad to see the return of Tito Ihaka and really enjoyed every page. I am not good at detailed reviews, let's just say I love the humour, the twists, the writing style, the characters.
I can't understand why Thomas doesn't have a higher profile, especially in NZ and Australia. Although the $19.69 price may put some off, it's definitely high for a kindle book. I highly recommend the book anyway. I hope Tito Ihaka makes another appearance in less than a decade.
Never disappointing, a novel by Thomas. Gritty, pacy storyline of the underbelly of Auckland low life, possibly closer to the truth than most of us would like to acknowledge, very likeable character in Ihaka with all his flaws, and his ability to seek out the truth. It has been too long between Ihaka stories , so here's hoping the next one isn't too far away.
