I had always considered trekking through Tibet and Nepal only for the sturdiest of beings. After reading Phil Druker's fascinating account, I could see the colorful prayer flags, smell the burning yak dung, and taste the daily tea he and his partners experienced. When learning that the author endured the many pains and dangers (as well as a multitude of pleasures) AFTER learning of his cancer diagnosis, I wondered where our strength really lies. Clearly, Phil Druker's passion for hiking through mountains was all the push his physically challenged body needed. This book rivals any I have read by the "popular" travel writers. Thank you, Mr. Druker, for letting me come along on your amazing journey.

Beyond the Clouds Trekking in the Hidden Land of Dolpo Phil Druker 9780615804545 Books Reviews

Anybody who's contemplating a trek in Nepal will have to read Phil Druker' s mesmerizing account of a journey that few westerners get to do. This man knows how to write! And he is fearless! Snap this puppy up before it's out of print!
Phil Druker's honesty in his writing is what pleased me the most. Phil shared his self-doubts about this great journey. He was afraid of falling, of snakes, and of Maoist insurgents he may encounter, but he was also afraid that he would not be able to keep up with his younger, fitter companions, a worry probably made more intense because of his bout with cancer. Despite his fears he persevered! As a traveler myself, I enjoyed traveling from the comfort of my home! Thank you Phil. We will miss you. Beyond the Clouds Trekking in the Hidden Land of Dolpo
I was totally captivated by Beyond the Clouds Trekking in the Hidden Land of Dolpo. Phil Druker's ability to capture his feelings, the energy, and the challenges of the trek allows the reader to share an amazing experience! I am motivated to learn more about and experience Buddhism, meditation and this special part of the world. There were times I thought I was out there as a member of the trekking party. The author's descriptions created pictures in my mind, grabbed my heart and transported me to a unique space in time and culture. His sensitivity to culture and the need to respect differences sets a standard that we all need to incorporate into our lives, if we are to become global citizens.
I would like to thank Phil Druker for writing this book for the opportunity to share his spiritual journey and physical trek through the Dolpo. Most of us don't have the strength, discipline, or stamina to do what the writer and his companions did on this journey, but now we can come a bit closer by reading Beyond the Clouds. I relished Druker's observations of the people and places he visited and found myself slowing down as I neared the end of the book, wishing my journey reading it could last a bit longer. But what I am most grateful for is the reminder that "each step counts." I don't often feel inspired by nonfiction books like this, but I am inspired. Druker mentions his cancer diagnosis only briefly, yet the subtext of this journey is that he is in the process of learning how to live--and die--by learning how to pay close attention to every step. We all need to learn (and re-learn) the same lesson.
A heartfelt and knowledgeable story about a hidden land that has rarely been explored by outsiders, and has just recently been opened up for tourists but very strictly limited. Something that I would never get to do in this lifetime for a myriad of reasons financially, physically and because I just don't have the guts- was brought to life by Phil Druker's narrative about his harrowing trek through the rough, rugged terrain of Dolpo in Nepal near Tibet. I stayed up late reading for three nights in a row biting my fingernails as he courageously walked through blizzards with yaks, took shelter in ancient monasteries learning about their religion, and skittered along slippery, shale cliffs that dropped to abysses of certain death. His words about Buddhism and meditations and the Dolpo peoples was a delight and so insightful. I felt that I was there walking in his footsteps. I am thankful that he took the time after each exhausting day even with cancer and vertigo to write in his journal and then put them all together so thoughtfully so that I could read about this amazing place on top of the world.
Well written and enjoyable, a little more of times and topographic detail would have been great, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed, an easy read.
In Beyond the Clouds, Phil Druker takes the reader on a powerful journey, trekking the remote Upper Dolpo region of Nepal where time seems to have stood still. Druker's detailed and vivid descriptions truly create the ambience that the reader is actually experiencing the scenery, the people, the culture, and the rugged and challenging trails, crossing passes at high altitudes and gripping for footholds on unstable scree slopes where one false footstep could result in a long and most likely fatal fall down the mountain. This reader was truly sad to come to the end of the trek and is inspired to learn more about the area and perhaps journey there someday.
